ST. ISAAC’S CATHEDRAL
St. Isaac’s Cathedral is known as the world’s
forth largest one-dome cathedral after St. Peter’s in Rome, St. Paul’s
in London and Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. It is also one of the
most beautiful cathedrals dedicated to Saint Isaac of Dalmatia.
The cathedral was built to the design of the French architect Auguste Montferrand
in the 19th century. Its construction took 40 years and was carried out
by ten thousand workers. The cathedral’s interior is richly decorated with
murals, mosaics and sculptures. St. Isaac’s used to be Russia’s main cathedral,
where Russian tsars and members of the royal family were baptized. Now
it is a museum; however, the major Orthodox religious ceremonies are held
here. St. Isaac’s is also famous for its colonnade, which serves as the
city’s best observation point, commanding splendid views across St. Petersburg.
